A Welcome Change

The Liquor and Cannabis Board announced action levels for a list of 59 chemicals used in pesticides and other agricultural products. An “action level” is the maximum amount of a certain chemical that is permitted in a product intended for human consumption, above that level the product must be destroyed, recalled, or used for non-consumer purposes.

This is a welcome change because prior to this rule change most of these chemicals had a zero tolerance threshold, which was both difficult to test in the lab and difficult to achieve at the grow because some of these chemicals occur naturally.

As a consumer product intended for human consumption, it is essential to the welfare of consumers and the entire industry that safety be paramount. However, the regulations must balance the interests of the consumer with the commercial and scientific realities of producing the product.
