Wei Hu

Wei Hu, Esq. specializes in NY Cannabis Law and the NYS Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA). Since the inception of New York State’s MRTA on March 31, 2021, Wei has been representing and providing legal counsel to clients, businesses and ancillary companies on areas of Adult Use Cannabis licensing, compliance, corporate, and legislative issues. Prior to 2021, Wei honed his legal practice in NYS Administrative / Regulatory, Public Benefits, and litigation while working for The City of New York as Executive Agency Counsel at the Department of Social Services for over 14 years. His extensive legal experience includes representing NYC in various State and federal courts, administrative hearings before the NYS Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance, and judicial appeals under NY CPLR Article 78 proceedings. Moreover, he also worked on administrative rulemaking, public hearings and comments, promulgation of new NYS and NYC regulations.
Wei has been involved in public service for over 15 years – from the Legal Aid Society, Juvenile Rights Division, to NYC Administration for Children’s Services, to NYS Attorney General’s Office, Bureau of Investor Protection, and to NYC Department of Social Services / Human Resources Administration. His career has focused on deliverying public benefits and services to New Yorkers in need, and has helped administer the largest social services district in the United States, with billions of federal TANF and SNAP funding disbursed to low-income households annually.
Wei is a member of the Hudson Valley and New York City Cannabis Industry Associations, the Asian-American Bar Association of New York. He has presented and held legal clinics on NYS’ new law (Criminal Procedure Law 440.46-a) to expunge prior marijuana convictions not subject to automatic vacatur.  Wei earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and German from Wesleyan University in 2001, and his Juris Doctor degree from CUNY Law School in 2006, where he was an Associate Editor of the New York City Law Review. He is admitted to practice law in Connecticut, New York State, and Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. He enjoys writing and literature—and (partly) judges people on their appreciation of David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest; ran his fastest NYC Marathon time at 3:40; is a certified Vinyasa yoga instructor (200-hour course at Laughing Lotus); and dreams of hiking the Appalachian Trail and El Camino de Compostela upon retirement. Wei resides in downtown Manhattan with his wife and two young daughters, and spends his weekends in Shawangunk, NY (Ulster County).
